Commanding Officer (July 2010 - March 2012)

LCDR Vic Sheldon is the son of COL and Mrs. Victor L. Sheldon Jr. USA(ret). In June of 1995, he entered the United States Naval Academy as a Midshipman 4th Class. During his 4 years at USNA, he earned a B.S. in Ocean Engineering. Upon graduation in May 1999, he proceeded to Newport RI for the Surface Warfare Officer’s School, Division Officer Course.

His first tour was as Communications Officer and later as Damage Control Assistant in USS INGRAHAM (FFG 61), he also served as a Visit, Board, Search and Seizure Boarding Officer. During this tour, he qualified as a CICWO, OOD U/W, CDO and Surface Warfare Officer and completed a deployment to the Western Pacific and the Arabian Gulf as part of the CARL VINSON Battle Group in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. LCDR Sheldon reported to his second tour as Navigator in USS SACRAMENTO (AOE 1) in March 2002. Aboard SACRAMENTO, he qualified as TAO and EOOW, and completed an 8 month WEST PAC deployment again with the CARL VINSON Battle Group in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM.

In September of 2003, LCDR Sheldon again reported to the United States Naval Academy, this time as the Security Officer for the U.S. Naval Academy and Naval Station Annapolis. As the Security Officer he was privileged and honored to be a part of the planning and execution of several high profile events, including the CNO Change of Command in 2005 as well as several Presidential visits.

Upon completion of his tour as Security Officer, LCDR Sheldon attended Aegis Combat Systems Training and again reported as a student to the Surface Warfare Officer’s School, Department Head and Prospective Engineering Officer Course. Upon completion of the Department Head pipeline, LCDR Sheldon reported to USS HOPPER (DDG 70) in January of 2007 as the Chief Engineer. He quickly re-qualified as TAO and EOOW. Aboard HOPPER, LCDR Sheldon made another deployment to the Western Pacific and the Arabian Gulf, this time as part of the USS TARAWA Expeditionary Strike Group. The TARAWA ESG was directly involved in OPERATIONS ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM conducting Theatre Security and Cooperation (TSC) Operations including defense of Iraq’s critical Oil Producing infrastructure.

In November of 2008, LCDR Sheldon reported to MCM Crew PERSISTENT embarked in USS DEVASTATOR (MCM 6) as Executive Officer, he has made two deployments with Crew PERSISTENT to the C5F AOR in USS SCOUT (MCM 8) conducting several multi-national MCM Exercises including ARABIAN GAUNTLET 09, NAUTICAL UNION 09 and 10 as well as SHAMAL 09-2, SHAMAL 10-2. He “fleeted up” as the Commanding Officer of Crew PERSISTENT on 1 July, 2010 and is currently in Command of USS CHAMPION.

Personal awards include Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals (four), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three) and various other unit and service awards.
