Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman James Tinker joined the Navy at the age of seventeen through the Delayed Entry Program. On August 6th, 1991, he left his home of Bangor, Maine to attend boot camp, Hospital Corpsman āAā school, and Advanced Medical Laboratory Technician āCā school, all in San Diego California.
After becoming an Advanced Medical Laboratory Technician in 1993, he completed tours at Branch Medical Clinic, NAS Brunswick, Maine, and at overseas US Naval Hospitals Naples, Italy, and Keflavik Iceland.
In 2005, he reported onboard the USS KITTY HAWK (CV63), homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, where he also deployed on the USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC19). After a successful sea tour, he transferred to instructor duty at the Naval School of Health Sciences, San Diego, California in 2007.
In addition to instructing in various C schools, he also served as a special assistant to the Navy Surgeon General, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED), as the Enlisted Technical Leader for Medical Laboratory Technicians, Cytotechnologists, and Histopathology Technicians, and prepared all three schools to transition to the joint Medical Education and Training Campus (METC), San Antonio, Texas. In 2010, he was selected as the Navy Medicine Manpower, Personnel, Training & Education Command (NAVMED MPT&E) Senior Instructor of the Year, the Society for Armed Forces Military Laboratory Scientists (SAFMLS) Military Member of the Year, and was the first US service member to present at the UK National Military Pathology Conference, speaking on multinational operations and joint training.
In 2010, Senior Chief Tinker reported to US Naval Hospital, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader. In 2012, he reported to MCM Crew FEARLESS where he currently serves as the Command Senior Chief.
Senior Chief Tinker was selected for Chief Petty Officer in 2007, Senior Chief Petty Officer in 2010, and Command Senior Chief in 2012. He graduated with honors from Excelsior University with a Bachelor of Science degree, is qualified as a Master Training Specialist, and has attended both Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 163) and the CMC/COB course.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal (six awards), the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (two awards), and various other service and unit awards.
