Hispanic Heritage Month
MCM CREW Fearless Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
On Thursday October 14, MCM Crew Fearless took time out of the busy schedule to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The gathering began with words from QMC (SW) Jansen highlighting the creation of Hispanic Heritage Week by Lyndon Johnson and expansion to a full month by Ronald Reagan in 1988. At this time QMC (SW) Jansen made sure to express the necessity of recognizing different cultures and that each member of the crew brings new talent and views to the navy.

Next, ENS Murphy spoke about the Hispanic American influence on present day to include owners of corporations, authors, and celebrities all of whom play an important role in their own communities. This presentation included an all Spanish introduction which caught most of the crew by surprise as ENS Murphy is of Cuban and Irish descent.

IT1 (SW/AW) Gutierrez next spoke about one of the most legendary naval officers, Admiral David Farragut. A little known fact, Farragut is a common name in the Spanish island of Minorca, from which Admiral Farragut’s father was born. This Hispanic American is famous for his quote “Damn the torpedoes!”, as torpedoes were actually mines used during the Civil War.

QMSN (SW) West told the story of Admiral Horacio Rivero, Jr. who was the first Puerto Rican born Admiral in the US Navy. Admiral Rivero was part of the Guadalcanal fire support operations and later took part in the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban missile crisis. Finally as an Admiral he oversaw the affairs of the navy as the Vice Chief of Naval Operations during the Vietnam War.

The last presentation came from HM1 (FMF) Resop who took the time to relate a few pieces of history from our homeport of California. Most of these events were the direct impact of our neighbor to the south, Mexico. To tie in with the presentations the galley prepared a full Mexican meal with fresh tortillas, vegetables, spices and well prepared meat.

The event allowed for Crew Fearless to take a moment and appreciate the vast diversity of our nation, navy and crew. To continue in the spirit of cultural awareness MCM Crew Fearless has made a pledge to recognize as many days, weeks and months which spotlight the different cultures which make our nation great.
