Commanding Officer (October 2009 - October 2011)
LCDR Martin J. Holguin hails from El Paso, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1999 with a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering. Following OCS, he completed basic shipboard and advanced Steam Engineering training at the Surface Warfare Officer School (SWOS) in Newport, Rhode Island.
LCDR Holguin's first sea tour was in USS DULUTH (LPD-6), San Diego, CA. He served as the Main Propulsion Boiler, Electrical, and Electronic Warfare Officer from 2000-2002. He earned Surface Warfare and Engineering Officer of the Watch Qualifications while DULUTH conducted a CENTCOM Deployment and supported the USS COLE (DDG 67) post 2001 Yemen terrorist attack in the Gulf of Aden.
LCDR Holguin then reported to USS SHILOH in San Diego, CA and served as the Fire Control and Weapons Officer from 2002-2004. He qualified as Anti Air Warfare Coordinator, Tactical Action Officer, and Force Air Defense Commander Watch Officer with the Abraham Lincoln Strike Force during OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM in 2003.
On shore assignments from 2004 - 2006, LCDR Holguin earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, completed JPME Phase I, and certification in Mechanical Engineering for Total Ship Systems from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He then served as an Associate Fellow for the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group (CNO's SSG) XXV in Newport, Rhode Island where he worked with Senior and Associate Fellows on concepts to meet the anticipated future demands on the United States Navy.
LCDR Holguin reported aboard USS PORT ROYAL (CG 73) and served as the Weapons and Combat Systems Officer from 2007 - 2009. PORT ROYAL successfully deployed and was the first Ballistic Missile Defense Ship to carry the SM-3 missile in CENTCOM AOR. PORT ROYAL served as the Air Defense Commander in Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2008 and conducted multiple live fire exercises with participating partner country navies.
LCDR Holguin reported to rotational MCM CREW FEARLESS in MAR 2010 as the Executive Officer and is currently serving as the Commanding Officer embarked in USS PIONEER (MCM 9) in San Diego, CA and USS ARDENT (MCM 12) in Manama, Bahrain.
