LCDR Rion W. Martin
LCDR Martin is a native of Southern California. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2002 where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, co-founded Campus Crusade for Christ ministry and played football.
Upon graduation, he reported to Surface Warfare Officer School (SWOS) in Newport, Rhode Island for Surface Warfare Division Officer, Basic Steam Engineering, Combat Information Center Officer, and
Electronic Warfare Officer. While in Newport Rhode Island he was a volunteer coach for the Newport Vikings Youth Football Association.
In December 2002, he reported to USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD 6) as the Electrical Division Officer, homeported in San Diego, CA. As a member of Amphibious Task Force West “Magnificent Seven”, BONHOMME RICHARD deployed as the “Harrier Strike Carrier” in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and National Tasking from January through August 2003. While onboard he qualified as Officer of the Deck, Engineering Officer of the Watch, and was designated as a Surface Warfare Officer in March 2004.
In January 2005, he reported to Mine Warfare Training Center in Ingleside, Texas for instruction in mine warfare operations before reporting to USS PELICAN (MHC 53) Crew EXCEL as the Operations Officer.
In May 2006, he was selected for the USNA Company Officer Masters Program at the University of Maryland. In May 2007 he graduated with a Master of Professional Studies Degree in Leadership, Education, and Development. While at USNA from 2007 to 2010, Lieutenant Commander Martin was the 8th Company Officer and an adjunct Leadership Instructor.
Upon completing shore duty, he attended Department Head school at Newport, Rhode Island in preparation for his duties as Chief Engineer onboard USS PINCKNEY (DDG 91) From June 2010 to December 2011 where he deployed to 5th and 7th Fleet AOR’s.
His military decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), and various other personal and unit commendation awards.
