LCDR Robert M. Laird
Commanding Officer

Lieutenant Commander Rob Laird originally hails from Tampa, Florida. He was accepted into the United States Naval Academy, Class of 2000, and graduated with an undergraduate degree in Marine Engineering.

LCDR Laird was assigned to his first ship, USS NICHOLSON (DD 982) as Electrical Officer and Undersea Warfare Officer from March 2001 until NICHOLSON’s decommissioning in December 2002. LCDR Laird then transferred to USS MAHAN (DDG 72) to serve as Navigator from January 2003 to June 2004. There he also earned his first Engineering Officer of the Watch qualification.

Following MAHAN, LCDR Laird achieved his master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. His work included coordinating the hull and mechanical designs of the Total Ship System Engineering program’s Maritime Threat Response project and a thesis that modeled the heat generation and transfer characteristics of a naval railgun.

LCDR Laird’s Department Head tours were aboard USS MITSCHER (DDG 57) and USS GREEN BAY (LPD 20) where he served as the Chief Engineer from September 2007 until February 2009 and June 2009 until December 2010 respectively. He joined Crew DOMINANT as Executive Officer in November 2011 and “fleeted-up” to CO from 19 February through 10 October 2013 embarking USS WARRIOR (MCM 10), USS CHIEF (MCM 14) and USS GLADIATOR (MCM 11). As part of the force restructuring in support of the transition from rotational to permanent MCM crews, he transferred to MCM Crew LEADER assuming command on 28 October 2013.

LCDR Laird’s personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (5), Navy Achievement Medal (2), Expert Rifle and Pistol Medals, plus various unit and campaign awards.
