LT William J. Hafer
Executive Officer

A native of Grand Rapids, MI, Lieutenant William Hafer enlisted in the Navy in 1992. Following bootcamp and completing Gas Turbine Systems (Electrical) “A” and “C” schools he commissioned the USS MITSCHER (DDG 57). In 1999, LT Hafer reported to Naval Training Center, Great Lakes as a Gas Turbine Systems (Electrical) “C” school instructor and shortly thereafter was selected to participate in the Seaman-to-Admiral Program. He graduated from the University of San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in Accountancy and was commissioned in 2003.

At sea, LT Hafer served in USS STOUT (DDG 55) as Engineering Training Officer, STRIKE Officer and later fleeted up as Fire Control Officer. During this tour, he participated in the Sea Swap Initiative between the STOUT, GONZALEZ and LABOON, completed a 5th Fleet AOR deployment, conducted anti-piracy operations off the Horn of Africa and operations in Combined Task Forces 151, 152 and 58. Following a shore assignment, LT Hafer returned to USS MITSCHER (DDG 57) as the Chief Engineer, completed a deployment with the GEORGE H. W. BUSH Carrier Strike Group in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Maritime Security Operations.

Ashore, LT Hafer attended the Naval Post Graduate School where he earned his Master’s Degree in Operations Research and completed JPME Phase I. In his follow-on tour, he reported to Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, RI where he was assigned to the International Surface Warfare Officer School and taught prospective Department Heads and Division Officers of various nations Navy’s.

LT Hafer’s personal awards include three Navy Commendation Medals, five Navy Achievement Medals and various campaign and unit awards.
