USS Pioneer Astern Refueling
 
WESTERN PACIFIC (May 09, 2017) Mine countermeasures ship USS Pioneer (MCM 9), operating outside of Sasebo, Japan, completes an astern refueling with USNS Richard E. Byrd (T-AKE 4) under the supervision of commanding officer, Lt. Cmdr. Scott Jones, executive officer, Lt. Cmdr. Robert Wayland, and conning officer, Chief Mineman Mark Floor. Pioneer is the first minesweeper to successfully complete an astern refueling in 7th Fleet area of responsibility in 2017 and previously completed an astern refueling in August 2016.
