SASEBO, Japan – USS Patriot (MCM-7) hosts the Mixed Martial Arts Pacific Tour.
On 20 May 2013, The crew of USS Patriot (MCM-7), hosted four Mixed Martial Arts Fighters. Ensign John Golden, PATRIOT’s Morale, Welfare, and Recreaction Officer led Tom Lawler, Anthony Njokuani, Todd Duffee, and Matt Brown, on a tour of the ship as well as a meet and greet with the crew.
“Having the MMA Fighters onboard was a wonderful experience that greatly improved morale for all hands,” said Ensign John Golden.
The tour offered the fighters an opportunity to observe how the minesweeper Navy completes their mission and the critical equipment used to perform their unique operations. Touring a minesweeper gave a different aspect, as the fighters were used to seeing larger ships from their previous ship tours. As the final destinations on their tour, the MMA fighters were appreciative to view such a unique class of ship.
“It was a great experience. I did not know that minesweepers still existed, so seeing all the equipment and learning about the mission and how it is carried out in modern times with the limited manning was interesting. We appreciate all that the service members do to serve our country, so coming to PATRIOT was no problem. I was surprised by the reaction of the crew. I was not expecting them to be as excited as they were with all the work they have throughout the day. The crew was real motivated and interested in what we do, which in turn made the tour of the ship more fun.” Remarked Todd Duffee.
Upon completion of the tour, the MMA fighters signed autographs and posed for pictures with members of the crew.
USS Patriot (MCM-7) is an Avenger Class Mine Countermeasures ship homeported in Sasebo, Japan since 1994.
