Command Senior Chief

Senior Chief Ates is currently assigned as the Command Senior Chief onboard the Avenger class mine countermeasure ship USS Sentry (MCM 3) forward deployed to Manama, Bahrain.

Senior Chief Ates is a native of Urania, LA and raised in Joplin, MO. He enlisted in the United States Navy in December 1997 and attended recruit basic training and seaman apprenticeship training in Great Lakes, IL.

In April 1998, he reported to his first assignment as part of the Forward Deployed Naval Forces (FDNF), onboard amphibious dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) home ported in Sasebo, Japan.

In May 2001, he reported aboard the Spruance class destroyer USS Deyo (DD 989) home ported in Norfolk, Va., where he served as Divisional Leading Petty Officer. While onboard he completed DEYO’s final deployment prior to her being decommissioned from service.

Senior Chief Ates returned to Great Lakes, IL in February 2003, assigned to Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS), Professional Mariner school house as a seaman apprentice training instructor and curriculum development supervisor where he managed a curriculum development team in the development, piloting and implementation of the Boatswain’s Mate “A” School. He was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in September 2005.

In February 2006, he volunteered for a 425 day Individual Augmentee (IA) assigned to NAVESLG FORWARD operating at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Clark, Khowst, Afghanistan as an Embedded Training Team Member. He served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor and mentor to the 1/203rd Corp Afghanistan National Army Command Sergeant Major and Security Company Commander from February 2006 to May 2007.

In September 2007, he reported to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion One Thirty-Three home ported in Gulfport, MS where he served as Headquarters Company Leading Chief Petty Officer, Convoy Security Team Assistant Officer-In-Charge, Air Detachment Leading Chief Petty Officer and Detachment NAVCENT Senior Enlisted Leader. He completed deployments to Okinawa, Japan (two), Kandahar, Afghanistan and ISA Air Base, Bahrain.

In July 2013, he reported to Navy Personnel Command (NPC), Millington TN serving as the PERS-4013 ADMIN/DECK/SECURITY/SUPPLY Rating Specialist Lead and Shore Placement Leading Chief Petty Officer managing the manpower and distribution of 15 ratings and supported 2,500 commands. In February 2016, he was selected for the Command Senior Chief Program.

Senior Chief Ates is a graduate of the United States Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 173, Gold) and Command Master Chief / Chief of the Boat (CMC/COB) course (Class 161). He is qualified Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS), Seabee Combat Warfare (SCW) and certified as a Master Training Specialist (MTS). His personal awards include: Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medal (three awards), Army Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal (two awards) and various unit and campaign awards.
