LCDR James Correia

A native of Modesto, California, Lieutenant Commander Correia enlisted in the U.S Navy in 1991. His initial sea assignment was in USS VALLEY FORGE (CG 50) followed by an instructor assignment at Fleet ASW prior to being selected for the FY99 Seaman-to-Admiral Commissioning Program. He graduated from the University of San Diego with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and was commissioned an Ensign in 2002.

At sea, LCDR Correia served aboard USS MOBILE BAY (CG 53) as Main Propulsion Officer, Repair Division Officer and Auxiliaries Officer and with MCM CREW CONSTANT as Operations Officer. Following completion of Department Head training he completed tours in USS JARRETT (FFG 33), USS ANCHORAGE (LPD 23), and USS SAN DIEGO (LPD 22) as Combat Systems Officer. He reported as Executive Officer in July 2013 and assumed command of USS DEFENDER (MCM 2) on 31 January 2014.

Ashore, LCDR Correia was assigned on exchange with the Royal Navy at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, UK. During this assignment, he completed JPME Phase 1. Prior to attending Department Head School, he served in the Fleet Training Directorate at Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, Rhode Island.

Lieutenant Commander Correia’s personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal (3 awards), and the Arleigh Burke Leadership Award, in addition to various unit and service awards.
