LCDR Michael Tyree
Commanding Officer

LCDR Michael Tyree is a native of Jacksonville, Florida. In 2000 he graduated from Orange Park High School and was accepted to the United States Naval Academy. He graduated from USNA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and was commissioned in May of 2004.

LCDR Tyree reported aboard USS VICKSBURG (CG 69) as the Auxiliaries Officer while they were underway in the Arabian Gulf as part of the USS JOHN F KENNEDY Strike Group in support of OIF. Following that cruise he participated in a Counter Piracy deployment to the Horn of Africa. Upon VICKSBURG’s return, Lieutenant Tyree was shifted to Damage Control Assistant during preparations for the ship’s very successful INSURV. During his time onboard, he earned his Engineering Officer of the Watch qualification, and was selected to be a member of the nascent Littoral Combat Ship Program.

He reported to PCU INDEPENDENCE (LCS 2), Gold Crew, as the Main Propulsion Assistant in December of 2006. While onboard he was instrumental in the creation and initial development of almost every engineering program and instruction for the new class. He moved with the crew to Mobile, Alabama as the ship neared completion and helped finalize the first draft of the ship’s EOSS.

Following his division officer tours, LCDR Tyree attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, where he earned a Master of Science degree in Information Warfare Systems Engineering, and completed Joint Professional Military Education (Phase I), earning the Information Warfare Career Subspecialty Code. Afterwards he completed the Combat Systems Officer Course at ATRC Dahlgren, and Department Head School at SWOS in Newport, Rhode Island.

LCDR Tyree reported to USS DE WERT (FFG 45) as the Combat System Officer in July 2012 and immediately got underway for her War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration Great Lakes Cruise. During his tour he also successfully completed a NATO Counter Piracy Deployment to the Horn of Africa which included support of American special operations forces in the area. His tour ended with the decommissioning of DE WERT.

On 23 June, 2016, LCDR Tyree assumed Command of USS CHIEF (MCM 14), homeported in Sasebo, Japan.
