LCDR Jeffrey Chewning
Commanding Officer

LCDR J Chewning is a native of Germantown, Maryland, and graduated in 2005 from the United States Naval Academy with a degree in International Relations. His first duty assignment was in USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) in Yokosuka, Japan where he served as Personnel Officer and 2nd Divo in Deck Department onboard COMSEVENTHFLT’s command ship, completing two min-WESTPAC deployments in Southeast Asia.

Following his tour in Japan, he reported onboard USS Gettysburg (CG 64) as the Damage Control Assistant. In 2007 he completed a deployment to Fifth Fleet where GETTYSBURG served as shotgun to CCSG-12 in support of OIF and OEF. Upon returning from deployment, GETTYSBURG sailed to the Baltic Sea and served as the U.S. flagship in BALTOPS 2008. He completed his second deployment to Fifth Fleet in 2009 when GETTYSBURG served as the CTF-151 command ship conducting counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden while attached to CCSG-8.

LCDR Chewning’s department head tour was in USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) as the Chief Engineer where he completed INSURV and conducted the homeport shift from Norfolk, VA. to Rota, Spain. Upon arrival in Sixth Fleet, DONALD COOK conducted her maiden BMD patrol as FDNF Europe’s first destroyer permanently attached to DESRON-60, participating in numerous coalition operations in the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea.

Shore assignments include Joint Fires Strike Officer for COMUSNAVCENT/COMFIFTHFLT in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain, from July 2009 to July 2010 where he was responsible for all TLAM missions in the AOR- including real world strikes. Following his year in Bahrain, LCDR Chewning completed a twelve month GSA in support of the Iraqi Training and Advisory Mission-Navy (ITAM-N), in Umm Qasr, Basrah Province, Iraq. He served as XOIC onboard Iraqi Patrol Boat P-301 and later as OIC of P-303, where he led the training and certification of the Iraqi Navy crews for oil platform security operations in the Northern Arabian Gulf. Following his year in Iraq, LCDR Chewning was stationed at SWOSCOLCOM in Newport, RI. as an International SWOS instructor and a lead developer for the new Basic Division Officer’s Course (BDOC).

Most recently he completed a tour as the Executive Officer in USS Dextrous (MCM 13).

LCDR Chewning is a JPME Phase I graduate and holds an MBA from Saint Leo University.
