Hospital Corpsman First Class Petty Officer
Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Petty Officer Patrick D. Satterfield, a native of Magnolia, Del., enlisted in the United States Navy in September 2000 and reported to basic training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Ill. After completing Airman “A” school in Pensacola, Fla. he reported aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) and served as an undesignated airman. He then chose to strike to the rating of Hospital Corpsman and attended “A” school in July 2004.
In November 2004, he was attached to the Orthopedic Ward at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth. After two years, Satterfield selected orders to USS Mason (DDG 87), where he successfully completed two Mediterranean deployments and was promoted to second class petty officer through the Command Advancement Program. In July 2009, he transferred to Naval Hospital Portsmouth, Va. serving as the Navy Medicine East Planning Operation Medical Intelligence Leading Petty Officer. After certifying as a Basic Emergency Medical Technician, he applied for Surface Force Independent Duty Corpsman School, graduating with honors, and was promoted to first class petty officer in March 2012.
Satterfield then reported to Mine Countermeasures Crew Leader embarked aboard USS Warrior (MCM 10) in San Diego, Calif. On two occasions following MCM crew swaps, he assumed a “Less than Ready” (C-4) shipboard medical readiness status and turned it to a “Fully Ready” (C-1) in minimal time. His efforts led to Crew Leader receiving the Force Commander Health Promotion Unit Award (“Green H”) for 2012 and 2013. After completing a successful twelve-month deployment to the 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR), Satterfield was the first Independent Duty Corpsman to volunteer for the initial permanent crew to be stationed in Manama, Bahrain only 6 months later. His loyal devotion to mission readiness directly reflected his selection as the 2013 Independent Duty Corpsman of the Year for Mine Countermeasures Squadron Three. He was also selected as the Senior Sailor of the Quarter for the third quarter of 2014.
His decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (4), Meritorious Unit Award (2), Navy Battle “E” Ribbon, Good Conduct Award (3), National Defense Service Medal (2), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (5).
