Command Master Chief

Master Chief Vargas is from Bonao, Dominican Republic and raised in Bronx, New York. After graduating from High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and reported to Recruit Training Command, San Diego, California in September 1991. After boot camp, he attended Aviation Structural Mechanic (Hydraulics) “A” School in Millington, Tenn. with follow-on orders to his first duty assignment at VC-8, in Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico.

In December 1994 he was advanced to Petty Officer Third Class and earned his Federal Aviation Administration Airframe and Power Plants certification. In August 1995, he transferred to HS-1 in Jacksonville, Florida to conduct Fleet Replacement Training. Shortly after, he was advanced to Petty Officer Second Class. In April 1997, he reported to HS-15 followed with orders to Recruiting Duty in October 1999. As a Navy Recruiter, he earned the distinction of “Recruiter in Charge” and was promoted to First Class Petty Officer. He returned to the Fleet in September 2002, assigned to HS-14 in Atsugi, Japan. He was advanced to Chief Petty Officer in Sept 2004.

In September 2005, He transferred to Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois and was awarded the Naval Education and Training Command Senior Instructor of the Year award. His next duty assignment was at HS-5 in Norfolk, Virginia where he was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer. In January 2012, he reported to VX-9 in China Lake, California and was selected for the Command Senior Chief program.

In November 2012, Master Chief Vargas reported to Transient Personnel Unit, Great Lakes as the Command Senior Chief. In October 2013 Master Chief Vargas reported for duty onboard the USS CHIEF( MCM 14), followed by a homeport change to the USS GLADIATOR (MCM 11) in Manama, Bahrain. He is a graduate of the Command Master Chief Course and the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy in Newport, Rhode Island.

Master Chief Vargas is qualified as Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist (EAWS), Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS), and Master Training Specialist (MTS). His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (seven awards), and numerous unit and campaign awards.
