SASEBO, Japan - Lt. Cmdr. Kevin McCormick relieved Lt. Cmdr. Robert Laird as Commanding Officer, of the mine countermeasure ship USS Warrior (MCM 10), in a ceremony at Naval Station Sasebo on May 2, 2013.

Laird took command of Warrior’s Dominant Crew in February 2013. While in command, Warrior completed a safe redeployment from the Fifth Fleet Area of Responsibility to replace USS Guardian as a forward deployed Naval ship in Seventh Fleet. Laird will resume command of the MCM Dominant Crew and rejoin his crew in San Diego.

“It has been my eternal privilege to have served with you fine Warriors, even if only for a brief time,” said Laird. “You have all redefined for me what it truly means to be resilient and I hope that I have, in my own small way, contributed to your continued success.”

With the reading of his orders and a brief speech to those in attendance McCormick officially assumed command.
"To my fellow Warriors, I am humbled to serve as your captain, " said McCormick "for there is no higher honor than to lead Sailors at sea."

Warrior is one of four Avenger class mine countermeasure ships, capable of detecting and neutralizing mines, which are forward deployed from Sasebo and are part of Mine Countermeasures Squadron Seven, and Task Force 76.
