Command Master Chief
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Master Chief Ortega enlisted in the Navy in June 1999. He graduated Engineman (EN) “A” School in Great Lakes, Illinois and proceeded on to his initial duty station onboard USS Robin (MHC-54), a Coastal Mine Hunter stationed in Ingleside, Texas.
Upon completion of his first sea duty, he returned to Training Support Great Lakes as an instructor. During this tour he was selected for Chief Petty Officer and was transferred to Pearl Harbor, HI aboard the USS CHUNG-HOON (DDG-93) as Auxiliary LCPO. Following a successful tour onboard, he was selected to Senior Chief Petty Officer and received orders to Coastal Patrol Crew ECHO. He led his Sailors in supporting counter-piracy operations as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader and as the Main Propulsion Assistant.
He then completed the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute Course and was detailed to COMNAVAIRPAC. During this tour he was selected to Master Chief Petty Officer. He completed his second Command Climate Specialist tour at the Naval Surface Forces, Pacific where he was selected to the Command Master Chief program. He then received orders to the USS PEARL HARBOR (LSD-52) where he continues to serve today.
Master Chief Ortega is a graduate of the Air Force Senior Enlisted Academy, Class 13B and the CMC/COB Course, Class 181. He earned his Associate Degree from Coastline Community College and has received personal awards to include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards) and various service and campaign awards.
