Commanding Officer (April 2011 - June 2011)
CDR Crary resides from Poughkeepsie, New York and graduated from Tupper Lake, NY High School. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1992 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Oceanography.
Commander Crary reported to USS RUSHMORE (LSD 47) in February 1993 and served as Weapons and Electrical Officer. During this tour he completed deployments in support of OPERATION RESTORE HOPE and SOUTHERN WATCH. In March 1997 Commander Crary reported to COMPHIBRON SEVEN as Assistant Operations Officer.
From May 2000 until October 2003 Commander Crary completed his Department Head tours as First Lieutenant on USS RUSHMORE (LSD 47) followed by a second assignment as First Lieutenant on USS PELELIU (LHA 5). During these tours, RUSHMORE served as Flagship for a CARAT deployment to the Western Pacific while PELELIU completed the workups for the first Expeditionary Strike Group deployment.
From February 2005 until October 2006 Commander Crary served as Executive Officer on USS JUNEAU (LPD 10). On JUNEAU he deployed to the Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM.
Commander Crary’s shore duty has included the Naval Postgraduate School where he earned a Masters Degree in Operations Research. His thesis “Measuring Surface Force Combatant Effectiveness” was a finalist for the prestigious MORS Award. Additionally, he earned a Masters Degree from the Naval War College in National Security and Strategic Studies and was a Halsey Scholar. Most recently, CDR Crary served as Deptuy Force Operations Officer at Commander, Naval Surface Forces in San Diego, CA. He served as the XO onboard the GERMANTOWN from November 17, 2008 prior to fleeting up to serve as the Commanding Officer. CDR Crary assumed the title as the Commanding Officer onboard HARPERS FERRY upon hull swap on April 21, 2011.
