Lieutenant Commander Matthew R. Shellock, a native of Little Silver, NJ, is the Executive Officer in USS RUSHMORE (LSD-47).
He received his commission in May 2001 through the United States Naval Academy, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Ocean Engineering. In 2008 he received a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School and concurrently earned his Command and Staff Diploma (JPME Phase I) from the U.S. Naval War College.
He has served all of his sea tours in the Pacific Fleets, all ships homeported in San Diego, CA. His initial assignment was as First Lieutenant in the Destroyer USS ELLIOT (DD 967) and was a member of the decommissioning crew. After a subsequent SEA SWAP, he served as Auxiliaries Officer in the Destroyer USS FLETCHER (DD 992) on her final deployment prior to decommissioning. For his official second division officer tour, he received orders as Main Propulsion Assistant to the Cruiser USS ANTIETAM (CG 54), where he had the privilege of a true around-the-world deployment.
Following Department Head School, he served as Chief Engineer in the Dock Landing Ship USS RUSHMORE (LSD 47), a single longer tour billet. While Chief Engineer, he led Engineering department through two full training cycles, a WESTPAC deployment, an INSURV full power demonstration, and a year-long Extended Docking Phased Maintenance Availability. He was selected to assume duties as Executive Officer in USS RUSHMORE in November 2011.
His personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (four awards), and various unit, campaign, and service awards.
