PHILLIPINE SEA - USS Tortuga (LSD 46) pulls alongside JS Hamana (AOE 424) to conduct a replenishment at sea during Annual Exercise 2011 (AE 11).

The uncommon evolution with a Japanese oiler helped showcase the goals of AE 11 which include bi-lateral training and coordination between the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and the U.S. Navy.

“A replenishment at sea is an inherently challenging evolution. But even in rough seas, our Sailors and the JMSDF crew will ensure that the evolution is conducted safely,” said Cmdr. Adrian Ragland, Commanding officer of USS Tortuga.

USS Tortuga, along with 13 other U.S. Navy ships, 69 aircraft, and greater than 9,000 Sailors are participating in AE 11, a bi-lateral exercise that focuses on practicing and evaluating coordination and interoperability elements required for responding to the defense of Japan, to a regional crisis or contingency situation in the Asia-Pacific region.
