Command Master Chief (January 2014 - May 2014)
Master Chief Steinly is assigned as Command Master Chief, USS GERMANTOWN (LSD 42), based at Fleet Activities, Sasebo, Japan.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 8 December 1986. Upon completion of basic military training at Recruit Training Center, Orlando, Florida and Yeoman "A" School at Naval Technical Training Center, Meridian, Mississippi, he was assigned to USS MARVIN SHIELDS (FF 1066) in San Diego, California. While on board MARVIN SHIELDS, he completed two Western Pacific/Arabian Gulf deployments and was advanced to Second Class Petty Officer.
In January 1991, he transferred to Service School Command, San Diego as the Admin Supervisor at the Advanced Electronics Schools. In April 1995, he transferred to Naval Air Facility, Adak, Alaska where he served as the Admin Leading Petty Officer. During his tour in Adak, he was advanced to First Class Petty Officer.
In March 1996, he returned to San Diego, reporting to USS ESSEX (LHD 2) where he served as Captain’s Office Leading Petty Officer. During this tour, he completed two Western Pacific/Arabian Gulf deployments and qualified Enlisted Surface and Air Warfare Specialist. In December 1998, he reported to Naval Regional Contracting Center, Singapore where he served as Military Personnel Officer and later as Admin Leading Chief Petty Officer. During this tour, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management from the University of Maryland.
In June 2003, he transferred to Strike Fighter Squadron 192 at Naval Air Facility, Atsugi, Japan as Admin Department Leading Chief Petty Officer. During this tour, he completed numerous deployments on board USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63) and was advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer. Following his tour with the World Famous Golden Dragons in June 2006, he attended the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 125). Upon graduation, he transferred to the staff of Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where he served as Staff Admin Department Leading Chief Petty Officer and Joint Task Force 519 (JTF 519) Flag Office Leading Chief. During this tour, he was advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer.
In September 2009, he transferred to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) where he served as Admin Department Leading Chief Petty Officer. During his tour at JBPHH, he completed a non-volunteer one-year Individual Augmentee deployment with United States Forces Afghanistan Detachment North in Mazar-e Shariff, Afghanistan as the Detachment Sergeant Major. While on his IA deployment, he was selected for the Command Master Chief Program. Shortly after his return, he attended the Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat Capstone course (Class 92) in Newport, Rhode Island.
In September 2011, he transferred to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 14 at Naval Air Facility, Atsugi, Japan as Command Master Chief. During this tour, he completed several deployments on board USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) and played a vital role in planning and executing the squadron’s homeport change from Japan to San Diego.
In July 2013, Master Chief Steinly returned to Hawaii for his final tour of duty at Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet as a member of the U.S. Pacific Fleet CPO Mess Training Team. In January 2014, he was temporarily reassigned as Command Master Chief for USS GERMANTOWN (LSD 42).
His military decorations include: Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (six awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal (four awards), and various service and campaign awards.
