CDR Carol McKenzie enlisted in the Navy in 1983. Her initial enlisted assignment was Naval Facility Keflavik Iceland as part of the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS) where she tracked the Soviet Fleet during the Cold War. She then transferred as an Instructor to Readiness Training Facility, Dam Neck VA followed by another tour at Naval Facility Keflavik, Iceland where she was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program in 1992. She attended NROTC at University of Michigan and attained her B.S. in Geology at Eastern Michigan University in 1995 and was subsequently commissioned.
Her shipboard assignments include, Combat Systems Electronics Officer, USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3); Auxiliaries Officer, USS Hue City (CG-66); Chief Engineer, USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44) and Executive Officer, USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) and USS Germantown (LSD 42).
Her shore tours include Commanding Officer, Navy Reserve Center, Cheyenne; Afloat Training Group, Norfolk; Commanding Officer, Navy Operational Support Center, Helena; Flag Secretary for Commander, Second Fleet; and Bureau of Naval Personnel, Chief of Naval Personnel Command. During her Command tours she mobilized troops in support of the World Trade Center attacks and Hurricane Katrina.
