Commander Carol McKenzie joined the Navy in 1983 where she attended bootcamp in Orlando FL and attended the Ocean Systems Technician “A” and “C” schools in Norfolk, VA. Her initial enlisted assignment was Naval Facility Keflavik Iceland as part of the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS) where she tracked the Soviet Fleet during the Cold War. She then transferred as an Instructor to Readiness Training Facility, Dam Neck VA followed by another tour at Naval Facility Keflavik, Iceland where she was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program in 1992. She attended NROTC at University of Michigan where she attained her B.S in Hydro-Geology at Eastern Michigan University in 1995 and was subsequently commissioned.
Commander McKenzie's first officer assignment was USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3) stationed in Sasebo, Japan where she was the Combat Systems Electronics Officer and the Legal Officer. Her follow-on tour was onboard USS Hue City (CG-66) as Auxiliaries Officer in Mayport, FL. She was then selected as a TAR officer and was transferred to Cheyenne, WY as Commanding Officer, Naval Reserve Center Cheyenne. Here she mobilized reserves immediately following the World Trade Center attacks.
Commander McKenzie served her first Department Head tour onboard USS Gunston Hall (LSD-44) as the Chief Engineer when she was deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom in January, 2003. Her subsequent Department Head tour she served at Afloat Training Group Atlantic where she certified ships Engineering Plant for safe operations. Her next assignment was as Commanding Officer, Navy Operational Support Center, Helena, MT. There she is credited with mobilizing the first troops for Hurricane Katrina Relief Operations. Her subsequent shore tours include Flag Secretary for Commander, Second Fleet in Norfolk, VA and Bureau of Naval Personnel, Chief Naval Personnel Command, Millington Tn.
