|CDR Gary A. Harrington II
Commander Gary A. Harrington II enlisted in the Navy in January 1992. Upon completion of recruit training and Gas Turbine Mechanic Class “A” school in Great Lakes, Illinois, he reported to USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CG 58) as a Gas Turbine Systems Mechanic. He returned to Great Lakes for Gas Turbine Mechanic Class “C” school then reported for duty to USS MOOSBRUGGER (DD 980) as Main Propulsion Division Leading Petty Officer. Commander Harrington was selected for the Seaman to Admiral Program and transferred to Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida where he successfully completed officer training and received his commission in May 1998.
His initial sea duty assignment was Combat Information Center Officer and Training Officer in USS MCINERNEY (FFG 8) from February 1999 to May 2000. His second sea tour was Navigator and Assistant Operations Officer in USS HUE CITY (CG 66) from July 2000 to December 2001.
Upon completion of his initial Division Officer tours, Commander Harrington was assigned to NROTC Unit Jacksonville University and attended Jacksonville University earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Management and Masters of Business Administration with a specialization in International Business and Finance.
Commander Harrington then completed Department Head School in Newport, Rhode Island in 2005 and reported to his first department head tour as Chief Engineer for MHC CREW CONQUEST followed by Chief Engineer for MCM CREW SWERVE in Ingleside, Texas. He then served a tour as the Chief Engineer in USS MESA VERDE (LPD 19) in Norfolk, Virginia.
Upon the successful completion of his department head tours, he attended the Naval War College and Maritime Advanced Warfighting School in Newport, R.I. He received a Masters of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies, his Joint Professional Military Education Phase One Certificate, and qualification as an operational planner. He then served a tour on the combined staff of U.S. Naval Forces Europe, U.S. Naval Forces Africa, and U.S. Sixth Fleet as the Future Operations and Plans Lead and Lead Planner for Africa Partnership Station in the Africa Engagement Directorate. He served as the Executive Officer and now serving as the Commanding Officer of USS GERMANTOWN (LSD 42) assigned to FDNF Sasebo, Japan.
