Command Master Chief
Master Chief Robert Barber enlisted in the Navy in 1987. Upon completion of basic training at Recruit Training Command, Pensacola, Fla., he attended Signalman ‘A’ school at NTC Pensacola, Fla. He served as a Signalman aboard USS Long Beach (CGN 9) from 1987 to 1988 completing his first deployment with Joint Task Force Middle East. While deployed to the North Arabian Sea in support of escorting U.S. Flagged Kuwaiti Tankers, Joint Task Force Middle East was tasked with the assault of two Iranian Oil Platforms in the Persian Gulf in response to Iran’s illegal mining operations.
In 1995, while serving aboard USS Juneau (LPD 10), he participated in two amphibious assaults conducted in support of Operation Restore Hope. While anchored off of Mogadishu, Somalia he supported numerous ship to shore movements in support of Humanitarian Operations.
In 1996, he reported to Naval Leader Training Unit, Coronado where he served as Lead Instructor for the First Class Petty Officer and Second Class Petty Officer Courses. Upon a highly successful three-year tour at NLTU Coronado he transferred to Beachmaster Unit One. While attached to BMU-1 he qualified Beach Party Commander, conducted humanitarian operations in Kenya and completed one deployment to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch.
In 2003, he was selected for Chief Petty Officer and served aboard USS Mustin (DDG 89). While stationed aboard Mustin he converted to Quartermaster, commissioned the ship, completed one deployment in support of Operation Southern Watch and earned the ship’s first and second Battle “E” awards.
In 2005, he reported to USS Boxer (LHD 4) where he served as the Navigation Departmental Leading Chief Petty Officer. While stationed aboard Boxer he qualified Officer of the Deck (Underway), becoming only the second enlisted person to qualify this position in the ship’s history. He was also promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer. He also completed an extended 8 ½ month deployment in support of Iraqi Freedom.
In December 2007 he reported aboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) as the Navigation Department Leading Chief Petty Officer and was promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer. While aboard USS Nimitz he again qualified Officer of the Deck (Underway) and completed a surge deployment and an extended eight month deployment in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom.
In December 2011 he reported aboard USS PELELIU (LHA-5) as the Navigation Department Leading Chief Petty Officer. While onboard USS Peleliu he was selected for the Command Master Chief Petty Officer Program. In June 2013 he reported aboard USS GREEN BAY (LPD-20) and is currently serving as the Command Master Chief.
He has been awarded the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (6 awards); Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (6 awards) and various unit and campaign awards. He is a certified 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and 4 Disciplines of Execution facilitator and a graduate of the Navy’s Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 135, brown).
