PASCAGOULA, Miss. (NNS) -- Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) Makin Island's (LHD 8) supply department received and inventoried 15 pallets of supplies at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding's (NGS) Consolidated Shipboard Allowance List (COSAL) Warehouse, Feb. 5, as part of an ongoing process to prepare the ship for her first underway period.
Makin Island's supply department spends approximately four days a week at the warehouse to ensure that one of the four pillars necessary to bring the ship to life is in place. These pillars, which include manning, equipping, training and production, are the building blocks for the ship's future success.
"Equipping is a major foundation piece that will provide us with tools, equipment and material required to operate and live aboard our ship," said Lt. Frederick Crawford, the ship's material officer.
Makin Island's supply department has ordered more than 24,700 items of varying quantities, which will all be inventoried and stored in the COSAL facility.
"To date, the storekeepers have inventoried more than 550 tri-walls of material, and we anticipate receiving and conducting inventory on another 1,500-plus tri-walls prior to sail away," said Storekeeper 1st Class David Forler, the ship's aviation supply leading petty officer.
Tri-walls are 5-by-5-by-5 foot reinforced corrugated boxes, which contain items the ship will need in order to conduct day to day business. Supplies include repair parts and consumables, medical supplies, bedding, gym equipment, library books and much more.
Makin Island is scheduled to depart Pascagoula for her new homeport of San Diego in spring 2009.
