USS Makin Island Preparing for Change of Command

SAN DIEGO  -- (August 25, 2010) Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class (SW) Ian De Leos, Deck Department’s 1st Division Leading Petty Officer, secures bunting to railing onboard USS Makin Island (LHD 8). De Leos, along with Makin Island’s nearly 1,000 crewmembers, are preparing the ship for the August 27 change of command ceremony where Capt. James W. Landers will relieve Capt. Robert G. Kopas as commanding officer. Kopas is the ship’s first commanding officer and has been in command of both Pre-commissioning Unit Makin Island and USS Makin Island since Sept. 2005.
