SAN DIEGO (August 27, 2010) - Capt. James W. Landers relieves Capt. Robert G. Kopas during USS Makin Island’s (LHD 8) first change of command ceremony August 27. Landers assumed command of the U.S. Navy’s only hybrid-electric drive amphibious assault ship. Kopas, who assumed command in Sept. 2005, was the first commanding officer of both Pre-Commissioning Unit Makin Island and USS Makin Island. (U. S.
