SAN DIEGO - Sailors from USS Makin Island's (LHD 8) Air Department extinguish a class bravo fire during a flight deck fire drill August 9. The drill simulates a helicopter crashing on the flight deck, and requires the Sailors to simulate putting out a fire, rescuing the helicopter's crew, as well as other actions dealing with flight deck damage control. The drill is just one of several events to prepare the ship and crew for Aviation certification and Final Contract Trials.
