SAN DIEGO - USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) Sailors completed the final calculations of their fund-raising for the 2011 Navy Marine Corp Relief Society (NMCRS) fund drive efforts May 5, with a total that exceeded the commands goals.

According to BHR's NMCRS Fund Drive Coordinator, Chief Fire Controlman (SW/AW) Edward M. Johnson, the goal for this year's fund-raising effort was $30,000 and BHR Sailors were successful in raising $34,000.

"The BHR team really came together to support not just Navy Relief but their fellow shipmates; it is very inspiring," said Johnson.

Fund-raising efforts started in early March, with command representatives hosting events such as a pie toss at the command picnic, pizza and donut sales, and recycling of bottles and cans. Command representatives also spent time educating BHR Sailors on the benefits of donating to the program.

"Navy Relief is special, because it's the only organization set up that gives 100 percent of donations to Sailors in a time of need; whether it is through zero interest loans, grants and in some cases scholarships," said Johnson. "The whole BHR crew showed great compassion and understanding of what it means to be a shipmate through their donations to this very important organization. I thank everybody that donated both time and money."
