|Captain Kevin P. Flanagan
Commanding Officer (July 2011 - January 2013)
Captain Flanagan hails from New York City, N.Y. He attended Southern Connecticut State College and received his commission from OCS in 1986.
His first tour of duty was aboard USS JUNEAU (LPD 10), where he served as Communications Officer and later, Boilers Officer. Other sea duty tours include: Battery Control Officer onboard USS LEAHY (CG 16), Operations Officer onboard USS GETTYSBURG (CG 64), Aide/Flag Secretary to the Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group FIVE, Executive Officer onboard USS THACH (FFG 43), Commanding Officer onboard USS AUSTIN (LPD 4) and Executive Officer USS BOXER (LHD 4). Captain Flanagan has completed numerous Western Pacific, Mediterranean and Middle East Force deployments
Captain Flanagan was selected to attend the Naval War College. While assigned to NWC, he earned his Master’s Degree in National Security Affairs. He completed his Joint Professional Military Education (JPME II) at the Armed Forces Staff College.
Captain Flanagan’s tours ashore include Seamanship and Navigation instructor at the United States Naval Academy, Maritime Warfare and Tactics instructor at Surface Warfare Officer School Command; PACOM and SOUTHCOM Division Chief on the staff of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff (J3).
In July 2011, Captain Flanagan assumed command of USS BOXER (LHD 4).
Captain Flanagan’s awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal; Navy Commendation Medal; Joint Service Achievement Medal; Navy Achievement Medal and various unit and service awards.
