|CAPT Frank J. Michael
Commanding Officer (January 2010 - July 2011)
Captain Michael, a native of Dallas, Pennsylvania, graduated from College Misericordia in 1986. He earned his commission through Aviation Officer Candidate School and was designated a Naval Aviator in December 1988.
Following initial flight training in the SH-2F, Captain Michael reported to HSL 32 at NAS Norfolk, Virginia where he completed three deployments and served as Detachment Maintenance Officer. Captain Michael then reported for flight instructor duty at HT 18, NAS Whiting Field, where he served as the squadron’s Administrative Officer and earned an M.A. Degree in Public Administration from the University of West Florida.
In June 1995, Captain Michael reported to USS GUAM (LPH 9), Naval Station Norfolk as Helicopter Direction Center Officer where he earned his Officer of the Deck (Underway) qualification. Following flight transition to the SH-60B Seahawk, Captain Michael reported to HSL 43 at NAS North Island, California where he deployed to the Western Pacific as Officer-In-Charge of Detachment SIX aboard USS INGRAHAM (FFG 61) and served as the squadron’s Maintenance Officer.
In May 2003, Captain Michael reported to HSL 47 as Executive Officer and in September 2004 assumed command of the squadron while underway on USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72). Under his command, HSL 47 completed a Western Pacific deployment with Carrier Air Wing Two and the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group as the first SH-60B squadron ever to integrate with a Carrier Air Wing and participated in Operation UNIFIED ASSISTANCE, providing Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief to the Tsunami-devastated northern region of Indonesia.
Captain Michael’s staff tours include Flag Aide to Vice Admiral John Nathman, Commander, Naval Air Forces and most recently was assigned to the Operations Directorate of the Joint Staff, Joint Chiefs of Staff.
In July 2008, Captain Michael reported to USS BOXER (LHD 4) as the ship’s Executive Officer and completed a Western Pacific deployment. In January 2010, Captain Michael assumed command of USS BOXER (LHD 4).
Captain Michael’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2), Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (2), and Navy Achievement Medal (2).
