From USS Boxer Public Affairs Office
SAN DIEGO - Commander, Naval Surface Forces recently awarded the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) with the 2011 Battle Effectiveness Award (Battle "E").

The Battle "E" is awarded annually to ships, submarines, aviation and other units that present the maximum condition of departmental readiness in their group and display outstanding capability to perform their wartime tasks. This is the 7th Battle "E" earned by the Boxer.

"I could not be more proud of the crew of the USS Boxer," said Commanding Officer Capt. Kevin P. Flanagan.

Ships competing for the Battle "E" are graded in different areas: maritime warfare; engineering and survivability; command, control, communications and information warfare; logistics management and ship safety. Boxer received command excellence awards in four of those five categories.

Boxer spent most of 2011 underway on a seven-month deployment conducting maritime security operations in the U.S. Fifth and Seventh Fleet areas of responsibility.

Boxer is currently undergoing a planned maintenance availability, and the crew is training to maintain proficiency in preparation to return to the fleet.
