PHILIPPINE SEA (Sept. 21, 2010) - The forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) launches a RIM-7P Sea Sparrow missile from the ship's forward NATO mount during a live-fire missile exercise. Essex, commanded by Capt. Troy Hart, is part of the forward-deployed Essex Amphibious Ready Group and is participating in Valiant Shield 2010, a joint-service exercise designed to enhance interoperability between U.S. forces.
