Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Fuels) First Class Petty Officer
Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Fuels) 1st Class Petty Officer Joseph C. Mathews is a native of Hayward, Calif., and was raised in Red Bluff, Calif. After graduating from Red Bluff High School in June 2003, he enlisted in the United States Navy and reported to Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, Ill. in June 2003. Following basic training, he attended and graduated from “A” school in October 2003 at Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC) in Pensacola, Fla.
His first sea duty assignment was aboard USS Essex (LHD 2) in Sasebo, Japan from November 2003 to December 2006. As a flight deck crew leader for fuels division, he participated in Operation Unified Assistance, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He completed two western pacific deployments and also received the Humanitarian Service Medal for his efforts during Operation Unified Assistance and was advanced to third class petty officer.
Upon completion of his first sea tour, Mathews attended “C” school in February 2007. He then reported to the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and assumed duties as the V4 Maintenance Assistant Leading Petty Officer, completing a Rim of the Pacific exercise and one western pacific deployment. Additionally, he qualified as enlisted aviation warfare specialist and enlisted surface warfare specialist.
Mathews’ follow-on assignment was the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island as Fuels Leading Petty Officer from April 2010 to April 2013. He was directly responsible for the training and supervision of 12 Sailors and two civilian personnel in aircraft direct refueling operations that supported 19 electronic attack squadrons. He was awarded the Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Command Puget Sound Sailor of the Year for Fiscal Year 2010.
He is currently the Air Department’s Leading Petty Officer for three distinct divisions with 191 Sailors under his charge aboard the USS America (LHA 6). He is also V4 Division’s Maintenance Leading Petty Officer and supervises 48 Aviation Boatswain’s Mates in the maintenance of the ship’s entire JP5 fueling system.
Mathews’ personal awards consist of the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4) and numerous service and unit awards.
