Command Master Chief (January 2010 - January 2012)
Command Master Chief Jeff Owejan is a native of New Windsor, N.Y., where he graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1990 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1991. After basic training, Owejan attended Gunner’s Mate “A” School in Great Lakes, Ill., and subsequent MK 41 Vertical Launching System “C” School in Damneck, Va.
In 1992, he checked aboard his first duty assignment, the Aegis guided-missile cruiser USS Hue City (CG 66), and qualified as an enlisted surface warfare specialist. Four years later in 1996, he transferred to another cruiser, USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) in Mayport, Fla.
After six years at sea, he returned to Great Lakes, where he would serve as an instructor at the Gunner’s Mate “A” School, Service School Command. While there, he qualified as a master training specialist and promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
In 2002, now Chief Owejan headed back to sea aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney (DDG 91) in San Diego, Calif., where he assumed duties as the Weapons and Combat Systems Leading Chief Petty Officer. He is also a USS Pinckney plank-owner.
Following his tour on Pinckney in 2005, he transferred to Ingleside, Texas, to join the Avenger-class mine countermeasures ships and was assigned as Command Senior Chief and the 3M Coordinator for MCM Crew Implicit, serving on USS Defender (MCM 2), USS Warrior (MCM 10), USS Pioneer, and USS Dextrous (MCM 13), which was forward-deployed to Bahrain.
As a proven leader, Owejan joined the staff at the Navy’s Senior Enlisted Academy (SEA) in Newport, R.I., as a staff facilitator and non-resident course director from 2007-2008. While at the SEA, he was chosen for the command master chief program and later assigned to his present position as CMC at the Center for Service Support, also in Newport.
In addition to teaching at the SEA, Master Chief Owejan is also a graduate of Class 116 (Green). He is also a graduate of the Naval War College’s Maritime Staff Operator’s Course and National Defense University’s Keystone Joint Senior Enlisted Leader Course. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Northeastern University and a Graduate Certificate in Maritime Studies, which he earned while attending the Australian Command Staff College in Canberra.
Owejan’s personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy Achievement Medal (six awards), Good Conduct Medal (five awards), Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal and various unit and campaign awards.
