CDR Spencer P. Austin
Commanding Officer - LCS Crew 101

CDR Austin is a native of Knotts Island, NC. He earned his commission from N.C. State University as part of the NROTC program in July 1998 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics.

His first tour was aboard USS VICKSBURG (CG 69) as the Communications Officer and First Lieutenant. He then transferred to USS TAYLOR (FFG-50) as the Navigator. CDR Austin served ashore as the Officer Recruiter for Las Vegas as part of Navy Recruiting District, San Diego. During this tour, he earned a Master in Business Administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

CDR Austin returned to sea for his Department Head tour aboard USS BENFOLD (DDG 65) as Operations Officer and was subsequently selected for Early Command XO/CO Fleet Up. He joined MCM CREW FEARLESS embarking USS CHIEF (MCM 14), USS ARDENT (MCM 12), and USS PIONEER (MCM 9) as Executive Officer before taking command of the crew and ARDENT and PIONEER, as both XO and CO successfully completing several Arabian Gulf Deployments and crew swaps.

Returning to shore duty he served in the Command at Sea Directorate at Surface Warfare Officer School as an instructor. Following that assignment, he attended the College of Naval Command and Staff at the Naval War College in Newport, RI where he earned a Master’s Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies and was a graduate of the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School for Naval Operational Planners.

His most recent tour was as Executive Officer of LCS CREW 101 embarked in USS FREEDOM (LCS 1) and USS FORT WORTH (LCS 3), completing a deployment to Indo-Asia Pacific Region.
