Commander Kim was raised in Riverdale, New York, and received his commission from the United States Naval Academy in 1996.
At sea, Commander Kim served as Electrical Officer and later as Main Propulsion Assistant aboard USS DENVER (LPD 9) from 1997 to 1999 and deployed to the Persian Gulf with the TARAWA Amphibious Ready Group. He then served as Fire Control Officer aboard USS THOMAS S. GATES (CG 51) from 1999-2001 during its deployment to Northern Europe as Flagship for NATO’s Standing Naval Forces Atlantic. As a department head, Commander Kim served as Weapons Officer aboard USS MILIUS (DDG 69) from 2003 to 2004, during its deployment to the Persian Gulf as Air Defense Commander for the BONHOMME RICHARD Expeditionary Strike Group and also participated in tsunami relief efforts in Indonesia. He then served as Combat Systems Officer from 2005 to 2006 when MILIUS participated in RIMPAC 2006 and various ballistic missile defense exercises to include Operation Stellar Predator (FTM-10).
Ashore, Commander Kim served as the Flag Aide to Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea in Seoul, Korea, from 2001-2003. He also served in the Pentagon on the Joint Staff, J-5, Directorate for Strategic Plans and Policy, as a politico-military planner in the NATO Policy Division and then as Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director for Politico-Military Affairs (Europe, NATO, Russia, and Africa), from 2008 to 2011.
Commander Kim graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in General Engineering. He also graduated from the U.S. Naval War College in 2008 with a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), the Navy Achievement Medal (three awards), and other unit and campaign awards.
