Command Senior Chief - Gold Leadership
Senior Chief Clayton A. Hartley is a native of Hoboken, Georgia. He enlisted into the Navy at Jacksonville, Florida in July of 1989. Following completion of recruit training in Great Lakes, IL, Senior Chief Hartley attended Gas Systems Mechanic “A” School at Naval Training Center, Great Lakes.
Senior Chief Hartley reported to his first duty station, USS JOHN HANCOCK (DD 981) in Mayport, Florida in June of 1990. There he completed his first deployment to the Persian Gulf and Red Sea in support of Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM where he was advanced to Gas Systems Technician Mechanical Second Class and earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist designation. He served on USS JOHN HANCOCK until 1992, when he transferred back to Naval Training Center, Great Lakes and attended GSM “C” school.
After completion of GSM class ‘C’ school he reported to USS ARLIEGH BURKE (DDG 51). While aboard USS ARLIEGH BURKE, Senior Chief Hartley completed two deployments to the Adriatic Sea in support of NATO operations. In 1995 Senior Chief Hartley reported to his first shore tour, instructor duty at NTC, Great Lakes, where he was advanced to Gas Systems Technician Mechanical First Class.
In 1998 Senior Chief Hartley’s reported to USS BARRY (DDG 52) as Main Propulsion Divisions Leading Petty Officer, home ported in Norfolk, Virginia, where he made two deployments to the Arabian Gulf and was advanced to Chief Petty Officer. He then reported to Afloat Training Group Atlantic in 2003. While assigned to the Gas Turbine training teams, he earned his Master Training Specialist and Afloat Training Specialist qualifications.
Senior Chief Hartley’s next assignment was pre commissioning unit for USS INDEPENDENCE (LCS 2) as the Senior Enlisted Engineer. After being advanced to Senior Chief in 2008, he graduated the Navy’s Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 141 Blue Group) and transferred to USS NITZE (DDG 94), home ported in Norfolk, Virginia. In February of 2011 he was selected for the Command Senior Chief program.
Senior Chief Hartley assumed his current duties as Command Senior Chief of pre commissioning unit USS FORT WORTH (LCS 3) gold crew, San Diego, California on Sep. 12, 2011.
Senior Chief Hartley’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, three awards, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, five awards, the Navy Good Conduct Medal, seven awards and numerous unit, service and campaign ribbons and medals.
