Commander Haney is a native of Fluvanna County, Virginia. He received his commission in 1998 from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in History and was assigned to Surface Warfare Officer training in Newport, RI.
His first sea assignment was onboard USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53) as Auxiliaries Division Officer where he earned his Surface Warfare Officer designation and deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch. His second Division Officer tour was onboard USS CHINOOK (PC 9) as Weapon’s Officer where he deployed to the Gulf of Mexico in support of homeland security operation Noble Eagle following 9-11.
Commander Haney then earned a Master of Science in Systems Technology from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA.
Following Department Head School in Newport, RI, he reported to USS MCCLUSKY (FFG 41) as Chief Engineer and completed a Counter Narcotics Deployment in the Southern Pacific. He was then assigned to DESTROYER SQUADRON TWO THREE as the Materiel Officer and did two deployments with the NIMITZ STRIKE GROUP, one to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom and the other a surge deployment to the Western Pacific.
Commander Haney’s shore assignments include Special Assistant and Diversity Officer to Vice Admiral Curtis, Commander Naval Surface Forces Pacific and J1 Exercise and Readiness Officer for U.S. Pacific Command where he forward deployed to Japan in support of Operation Tomodachi.
His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (6 awards) and the Joint Achievement Medal as well as various campaign, unit and service awards.
