CDR Matthew Kawas is a native of Matawan, New Jersey. He was commissioned in 1995 from the United States Naval Academy earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1996, he earned a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
His first assignment was aboard USS GETTYSBURG (CG 64) as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer. During this tour, he served as a Force Air Warfare Coordinator for the ENTERPRISE Battle Group during a Mediterranean/Arabian Gulf deployment and OPERATION DESERT FOX.
In 2000, after attending Naval Nuclear Power School and Naval Prototype Training, CDR Kawas reported to USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) where he fleeted up as Main Propulsion Assistant and Reactor Electrical Assistant and completed another Mediterranean/Arabian Gulf deployment and a major maintenance availability.
CDR Kawas reported to USS DONALD COOK (DDG 75) in January 2003 as the Operations Officer and deployed to the Mediterranean, Red Sea and Arabian Gulf in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.
In 2004, CDR Kawas was assigned to USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) as the Reactor Mechanical Assistant. During that tour, he completed a major shipyard maintenance period and deployment workups.
CDR Kawas’s tours ashore included Inspector, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, and Politico-Military Planner for homeland security, defense support of civil authorities, and pandemic influenza in the Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate (J-5) of the Joint Staff.
CDR Kawas’s awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (3 gold stars), Navy Achievement Medal (1 gold star), and various unit and service awards.
