Executive Officer

A native of Verona, New Jersey, Lieutenant Commander Brian Smith was commissioned in 2002 upon graduation from the United States Naval Academy and has served in a variety of sea and shore commands.

Smith’s sea duty assignments include duty on both destroyers and minesweepers. He served as repair division officer onboard USS O’Brien (DD 975), damage control assistant onboard USS Gonzalez (DDG 66) and USS Stout (DDG 55), chief engineer for MCM Crew Persistent, officer in charge for LCS Mine Warfare Detachment 2, and flag secretary for Commander, Carrier Strike Group One.

Ashore, he served as an instructor for Surface Warfare Officer School Learning Site San Diego, assistant operations officer for Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq, and diesel deputy for Engineering Assessments Pacific.

His current assignment is Executive Officer, USS Independence (LCS 2).

Smith’s personal decorations include the Bronze Star, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various service campaign and unit decorations.
