LCS Gold Crew Holds Change of Command Ceremony

SAN DIEGO  (April 13, 2011) — Littoral combat ship USS Freedom (LCS 1) held an exchange of command ceremony while inport San Diego, April 13.

Cmdr. Matthew Weber, Freedom’s Gold Crew commanding officer, relieved Cmdr. James Edwards, Freedom’s Blue Crew commanding officer, as commanding officer of Freedom.

Weber was raised in Elk Grove, Ill. and received his commission from the United States Naval Academy.  Prior to assuming command,  he served as the Gold Crew’s executive officer.

Gold Crew recently completed a four-month, rapid refresh sustainment period where they completed weapons qualifications; main-space training, utilizing the shore-based trainer; and general military training.

During the four months of Blue Crew’s on-hull period, it continued its post-delivery testing and trials schedule, as well as preparations for Freedom’s final contract trials. The testing consisted mainly of sea-state testing, which involved taking the ship into progressively heavier seas to validate the strength of the ship’s construction.
