CDR Michael L. Atwell
Executive Officer - LCS Crew 101

CDR Atwell hails from Ridgefield, CT. After graduating from Tufts University with a degree in Chemical Engineering, he attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned an Ensign.

His first assignment was in USS THACH (FFG 43) as Combat Information Center Officer and Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer. Following a hull swap, he served as Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer in USS GARY (FFG 51), which deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH. He next served as Electrical Officer in USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70), deploying to the Arabian Sea in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

CDR Atwell then reported to shore duty as a student in the Space Systems Operations program at Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. In conjunction with the Navy’s Tactical Exploitation of National Capabilities (TENCAP), he researched integration of data across multiple levels of classification for his Master’s thesis. He also completed a Naval Command and Staff diploma (honors) from the US Naval War College.

Following department head training, he served as the ‘plankowner’ Chief Engineer to commission USS GRIDLEY (DDG 101) while still under construction at Bath Iron Works and later after commissioning. He then reported as Material Officer (N4) on the staff of Commander, Destroyer Squadron THIRTY ONE, which deployed twice to the Southeast Asia/Oceania region as mission commander of the humanitarian assistance missions PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP 2007 and 2008, embarked in USS PELELIU (LHA 5) and USNS MERCY (T-AH 19), respectively.

CDR Atwell next reported to joint duty on the staff of Commander, US STRATEGIC COMMAND. He served as an Action Officer in the Resource Integration division (J82) and the Space & Missile Defense division (J31). Additionally, he spent a year as Executive Officer to the Chief of Staff, US STRATEGIC COMMAND.

CDR Atwell is currently the Executive Officer of LCS CREW 101. He wears the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and various unit and service awards.
