CDR Joey Frantzen
Commanding Officer (November 2012 - June 2014)

CDR Frantzen is a native of Saint Donatus, Iowa. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1994 receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science. He received his Masters Degree in Computer Science in 2001 from the Naval Post-Graduate School, Monterey, California. In 2001 he completed Joint Professional Military Education Phase I through the Naval War College.

Following graduation from the Naval Academy, CDR Frantzen attended Surface Warfare Officer School at Newport, Rhode Island. His initial assignment was onboard USS JOHN RODGERS (DD 983) from March of 1995 to March of 1997 in Charleston, SC and Mayport, FL. He was assigned as the First Lieutenant and Fuels Officer. He completed an overseas deployment to the Mediterranean Sea as part of Standing Naval Forces Atlantic (SNFL). CDR Frantzen’s Second Division Officer tour was onboard USS HUE CITY (CG 66) from July 1997 to May 1999 in Mayport, Florida. While onboard he served as the ship’s Fire Control Officer. During his tour he completed his second deployment to the Mediterranean Sea.

From August 2002 to August 2004, CDR Frantzen served as Force Protection, Weapons, and Combat Systems Officer onboard the USS VALLEY FORGE (CG 50) in San Diego, CA. He conducted Maritime Interdiction Operations in the North Arabian Gulf and was part of the Multi-national takedown of the MABOT and KAAOT Oil Terminals in the opening hours of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. He was onboard the North Arabian Gulf Commander’s Flagship and as TAO ensured the shepherding of shipping out of the Khawr Abd Allah waterway in the days before the opening salvos of the war. During this tour he completed two deployments, one to the Arabian Gulf and one to the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

From September 2004 to December 2007, CDR Frantzen served as Executive Assistant to the Director of Plans and Policy, U.S. Strategic Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.

From March 2008 to March 2010, CDR Frantzen served as Executive Officer onboard USS TAYLOR (FFG 50). During his tour he completed a Standing NATO Maritime Group – One Deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. From June 2010 to November 2011, CDR Frantzen served as Executive Officer onboard USS MOBILE BAY (CG 53). During this tour he completed an Arabian Gulf deployment as part of the JOHN C. STENNIS Carrier Strike Group in support of Operations NEW DAWN and ENDURING FREEDOM.

CDR Frantzen's personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (2 awards), and various command and campaign awards.
