CDR Joseph T. Shuler is a native of Bellevue, Washington. In 1989 he enlisted in the Navy as a Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Electrical), and upon completion of initial training, was assigned to ASSAULT CRAFT UNIT FIVE in Camp Pendleton, California where he made two Western Pacific Deployments. Following that tour he was assigned to Expeditionary Warfare Training Group Pacific (EWTGPAC) as a Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) craft control instructor. During his tour he was selected for the Legacy Seaman to Admiral Program and attended Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida where he earned his Commission as a Naval Officer. At Sea, CDR Shuler’s most recent sea tour was on the staff of Commander, Carrier Strike Group Three where he served as Assistant Surface Operations and Ballistic Missile Defense Officer deploying with the USS JOHN C. STENNIS Strike Group in support of Third and Seventh Fleet operations. Previous sea assignments include Officer-In-Charge, MIW DET TWO for the Littoral Combat Ship program from September 2006 to January 2008; Chief Engineer in USS RODNEY M. DAVIS (FFG 60) from January 2005 to July 2006; and Combat Information Center Officer, USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53) from November 1999 to May 2001; and First Lieutenant, USS GUARDIAN (MCM 5) from May 1997 to July 1999. On Shore, CDR Shuler attended the United States Naval War College in Newport, RI from August 2009 to May 2010, earning a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies and Joint Phase Military Education Phases 1 and 2. He received his Bachelors degree from the University of San Diego from June 2001 to June 2004 in Communications Studies. CDR Shuler has been awarded the Navy Commendation Medal (fifth award), and the Navy Achievement Medal (fourth award).
