Commanding Officer (May 2012 - November 2013)

CDR James Brown was raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, and a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1993, with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Chemistry.

Upon commissioning, CDR Brown served onboard USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG 62) as OI Division Officer and Strike Officer prior to completing nuclear power training. He then served as the Chemistry and Radiological Controls Assistant on USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74), completing her maiden around-the-world deployment.

CDR Brown then transferred to Expeditionary Warfare Training Group, Pacific, where he taught naval gunfire to Third Fleet surface combatants, and was a Range Safety Officer for live fire exercises on San Clemente Island. After attending department head school, he reported to USS CURTS (FFG 38) as the Operations Officer followed by assignment as the Reactor Electrical Assistant onboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68).

He was then detailed to the Nuclear Power Mobile Training Team for Commander, Naval Air Forces Pacific. CDR Brown served next as Executive Officer on USS McCLUSKY (FFG 41), conducting counter narco-terrorism operations in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Most recently he served as a Team Chief in the On-Site Inspections Directorate of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, supporting Plutonium Production Reactor Agreement verifications in Russia and International Atomic Energy Agency inspections in the United States.

CDR Brown holds a Masters in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University and a Masters in National Security Strategy from the National War College. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five gold stars) and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
