A native of Redding, California, Commander Kristin is currently serving as Commanding Officer, USS VANDEGRIFT (FFG-48) in San Diego, CA.
Commander Stengel’s most recent afloat assignment was as Commanding Officer in USS INGRAHAM (FFG 61), where she completed a six month independent deployment to the eastern Pacific in support of Counter Transnational Organized Crime operations for Joint Interagency Task Force-South. Previous sea duty includes a tour as the Executive Officer in USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53), where she completed a six month deployment with the NIMITZ Carrier Strike Group to the western Pacific in support of Ballistic Missile Defense Operations, a tour as Operations Officer in COMPHIBRON THREE, completing two deployments to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM , and a tour as Operations Officer in USS JARRETT (FFG 33), completing a deployment to the Arabian Gulf following 9/11 in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. Her Division Officer
assignments include a tour in USS OLDENDORF (DD 972) as CIC Officer and Engineer Officer and a tour in USS MOUNT HOOD (AE 29) as Auxiliaries Officer and Navigator.
Ashore, Commander Stengel served as a member of the Expeditionary Syndicate at Tactical Training Group, Pacific and as one of four post Department-Head / post-Executive Officer Surface Warfare Detailers at Navy Personnel Command. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, she earned her undergraduate degree in Computer Science. Her post-graduate education was completed in Operational Logistics at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.
Commander Stengel’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (Gold star in lieu of 3rd award), the Navy Commendation Medal (Gold star in lieu of 5th award), and the Navy Achievement Medal.
