Commander Jeffrey A. Miller is a native of Alton , Maine . He enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve March 1987 while still finishing high school and completed Boot Camp at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois at age 17. Upon graduation from Old Town High School , he attended Equipment Operator “A” in Gulf Port Mississippi and was later assigned to Reserve Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 27, Brunswick Maine.
Earning a Bachelors Degree in History from the University of Maine in 1993, he was commissioned as an Ensign and was designated as a Surface Warfare Officer.
Commander Miller served aboard USS COMSTOCK (LSD-45) as Combat Information Center Officer from 1994 to 1995. He earned his Surface Warfare Qualification on board the USS CONOLLY (DD-979) as 1st Lieutenant from 1995-1997. In 1997, he transferred to the USS OBANNON (DD-987) to serve as Main Propulsion Assistant. Fleet promoted to Department Head, he finished his tour as the Chief Engineer. Taking assignment in Yokosuka Japan , he was assigned as Chief Engineer onboard the USS CUSHING (DD-985) from 1998 to 2001. While serving onboard the USS CUSHING (DD-985), he screened for Command as a Lieutenant.
Having Command of the USS TEMPEST (PC-2) from September 7th, 2001 to May 2003, she was an integral part of defending the Eastern Seaboard in conjunction with Coast Guard Area Atlantic and Special Boat Squadron Two.
Commander Miller was screened for Command as a Lieutenant Commander to serve onboard the USS SCOUT (MCM-8) from November 2005 to June 2007. USS SCOUT conducted a homeport shift from Ingleside Texas to Manama Bahrain .
Shore assignments include the Naval War College , earning a Masters Degree in International Affairs and Strategic Planning. He was also selected as an Associate Fellow for the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group. He also attended the Joint Forces Staff College and is JPME Phase II qualified. His last shore duty was the Naval Planner for USCENTCOM Coordinated Planning Group, Riyadh , Saudi Arabia .
Commander Miller’s decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service, Meritorious Service, Navy/ Marine Crops Commendation (4), Joint Service Achievement, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement (2), and various fleet/service awards and medals.
