Commanding Officer


Commander Ann McCann is a native of Clearfield, Utah. She is a 1996 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and a 2007 graduate of the Naval Command and Staff program at the Naval War College with a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.
After graduation from the Naval Academy, Commander McCann was designated as a Surface Warfare Officer and assigned to USS HAYLER (DD 997), where she served as Electronic Warfare Officer and Strike Officer. Other operational assignments include Navigator and Administrative Officer in USS ASHLAND (LSD 48), Operations Officer in USS PORTER (DDG 78) and Operations Officer for Commander, Destroyer Squadron FIFTY.
Commander McCann’s assignments ashore include Personal Protocol Officer for the Commander, Supreme Allied Command Atlantic and United States Joint Forces Command; Maritime Domain Chief and Maritime Trainer for the Current Operations Division, Operations Directorate, Headquarters United States Northern Command; Executive Officer for the Director of Operations, United States Northern Command; and student at the Naval War College.
Commander McCann’s previous operational assignment was Operations Officer for Commander, Destroyer Squadron FIFTY in Manama, Bahrain from April 2005 to October 2006. She was responsible for operations and schedules for fifteen ships permanently stationed in the FIFTH Fleet area of responsibility and was the Commodore’s principal representative to FIFTH Fleet staff. DESRON 50 ships conducted operations in direct support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM, conducting boardings, providing security for Iraqi offshore oil platforms and ensuring maritime security throughout the FIFTH Fleet area of responsibility. Additionally, DESRON 50 participated in numerous exercises with coalition and regional partners, significantly increasing multinational cooperation and maritime security.

Her decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and other personal and campaign awards.
